Michael Napier joined the RAF in 1978 as a University Cadet. He studied Aeronautical Engineering at Imperial College London before qualifying as a Tornado GR1 pilot. He was posted to RAF Brüggen in Germany in 1985, flying in the Strike/Attack role with 14 and 31 Squadrons during the last five years of the Cold War. After a tour as a tactics instructor flying the Hawk at RAF Chivenor between 1990 and 1991, he returned to Brüggen, 14 Squadron and the Tornado GR1 as a Flight Commander in 1992 and took part in operations over Iraq in the aftermath of the first Gulf War. Two headquarters staff tours followed in Germany and the UK. Michael left the RAF in 1997 for a second career as an airline pilot with British Airways. He flew DC-10, Boeing 777 and Airbus A320 aircraft and he retired as a Boeing 787 captain in 2019. He is the author of 15 published books on military aviation history, including "Tornado Over the Tigris" which is a vivid account of his RAF flying career.
